The negotiations between the Bohemians and the Council of Basel may be regarded as the culminating moment of the Hussite Revolution. This book focuses on the initial phase of this extraordinary historical event. Building on earlier studies that have examined the Hussite hearings in Basel and the beginnings of the process leading to the Compactata, the author pursues the subject in greater depth and breadth. Drawing on extensive manuscript research, the study uncovers a wealth of new details, connections, and contexts.

At the centre of the author’s analysis lies the issue—both theological and political—of lay communion from the eucharistic chalice, which quickly came to dominate the debates in Basel and acted as a driving force behind the proceedings. By tracing the symbiosis of medieval scholarly idealism and political pragmatism, the author offers compelling answers to key questions: how many parties were involved in the struggle, what objectives they pursued, and which strategies and theoretical frameworks they employed to advance their aims and defend their convictions.
