The journal Numismatický sborník is devoted to presenting research in the field of numismatics from Antiquity to the early modern period. The main part of the journal consists of studies presenting numismatic research focused on the wider Central European region. However, the journal also includes articles dealing, for example, with Islamic numismatics or with the history of money based on written sources. Special attention is given to the regular publication of coin finds, both from the territory of the Czech Republic and of Bohemian coins discovered abroad. These contributions are published in dedicated sections.

About the Journal

Numismatický sborník has long been regarded as the most prestigious numismatic journal published in Czechoslovakia and later in the Czech Republic. Over the course of its long existence, it has undergone a complex development and numerous changes. The journal was founded in 1953, directly continuing the Numismatický časopis československý, which had been published since 1925.

The history of the journal’s publication is rather complex. Its publisher was initially the Historical Institute (later the Institute of Czechoslovak and World History) of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (vols. 1–15, 1953–1979), and later the Archaeological Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (vols. 16–19, 1983–1993). These volumes were published by the Publishing House of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (later Academia). The complicated situation within Czech numismatics was one of the main reasons why Numismatický sborník ceased publication after 1993.

The journal was revived in 2005, when its publication was taken over by the Institute of Philosophy of the Czech Academy of Sciences / Centre for Medieval Studies of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Charles University in Prague. Since 2012, the journal has been published twice a year. Today it is listed among peer-reviewed non-impact journals and provides a regular platform for the presentation of scholarly numismatic research.
