This volume, dedicated to the 1050th anniversary of the foundation of the Prague bishopric, brings together contributions by Czech and international specialists. The first section places the emergence of the first Bohemian diocese within the Central European context of the Carolingian and Ottonian empires, related ecclesiastical institutions, and processes of Christianisation in their various regions, including, for example, among the Polabian Slavs. To provide a comprehensive picture of this formative period, the volume also includes discussions of the ecclesiastical organisation of the emerging Hungarian and Polish states, as well as perspectives on the beginnings of the Church in Kievan Rus’.

The second section traces the processes leading to the establishment of the Bohemian diocese, its foundation, and its connections to the ecclesiastical traditions of Great Moravia. Equally important are case studies examining the Christianisation of Bohemian society, the relationship between the Prague bishops and the Bohemian ruler, and the formation of ecclesiastical structures. Closely related to these developments are the emergence of the cults of the first local saints and the material culture of the Church in Bohemia. In this context, attention is paid to sacred architecture, episcopal residences, liturgical furnishings, and the written culture inseparably linked to new forms of Christian learning and ecclesiastical administration.

The volume concludes with studies addressing the Bohemian and Moravian bishoprics during the pivotal periods of Hussitism and the Reformation, the subsequent re-Catholicisation, and the era of the reforms of Joseph II.
