Around the year 1000, the emerging Bohemian state was struck by a crisis that threatened its very foundations. This extensive work explores the alternative paths of development available to the Přemyslid rulers and examines how Bohemia and Moravia succeeded in integrating themselves into the political system of contemporary Europe.

The royal titles of Vratislaus II, Vladislaus II, and Přemysl Ottokar I marked symbolic milestones in this process—one shaped not only by celebrated battles, but also by brutal fratricidal conflicts.
