The 850th anniversary of the second royal coronation of the Přemyslid ruler Vladislaus II provided the impetus for an academic conference devoted to this event. The resulting monograph presents, across twenty-one chapters, the most essential aspects of the life and work of the Bohemian king and his activities as a founder.

The volume brings together contributions by twenty-seven authors from four Central European countries, who address the subject not only from a strictly historical perspective but also through the lenses of archaeology, art and architectural history, castellology, numismatics, and sigillography. The breadth of these approaches offers a vivid and multifaceted picture of the turbulent and dynamic twelfth century—one that the authors hope will appeal to a wider readership as well as to specialists.
