Bertrandon de la Broquière (c. 1390–1459) came from a lesser noble family based at the foothills of the Pyrenees. By chance, however, he found his way to the Burgundian ducal court in the distant north. There he distinguished himself in the service of Duke Philip the Good not only as a brave warrior, but also as an experienced diplomat and traveller.
Czech readers are thus presented with a unique testimony of a Western nobleman who travelled through Muslim lands and, to a considerable extent, adapted to their cultural realities.
